What has been the biggest surprise about pregnancy and motherhood:
"I think the biggest surprise about motherhood is how much my sense of compassion deepened when I had kids. I became more aware that everyone has a whole past and upbringing that I may or may not know about. I have compassion for the inner child in people. I have compassion for my inner child. Being a mother made that happen."
Best moment so far:
“Every moment. Even the hard moments are very full and meaningful. When my children were born…those were the biggest heart explosions I’ve felt.”
How do you balance your new mom-self and your "real" self?
“I have not yet figured this out… this is a work in progress for me. Every moment is different, every day is different, and I don’t yet feel like I’ve hit a perfect balance.”
Favorite thing about your child?
“Westlyn is spicy, full of personality, headstrong, knows what she wants and is extremely creative. I think my favorite thing about her is her sensitivity. It’s also the most complex thing. Chapel is the biggest life lover I’ve ever met. She is my little life spring of happiness. She’s inherently just a good person at her core and has a natural buoyancy about her that I really admire.”
What was the first gift you were given post pregnancy that was just for you?
"My husband and I did a lot of work on our home. Our respective home offices... My studio is where I'm creative and make all of my best workdays come to fruition because I have an amazing, inspired office designed by Pierce and Ward. My studio is a gift we gave ourselves that keeps giving."
How does being a mother feel, in vour own words?
“Being a mother made me feel more serious about my plans. That being said, I’ve also never felt more creative. There’s just something about the complexity of mothering and parenting that I feel can be very easily applied to one’s career. I feel like I’m just now starting to give the best work that I’m happy about and inspired by. It’s made me a better business owner and a better artist. I’m exploring filmmaking and acting, and I feel like I’m firing on more levels than I ever was before. It’s made me more of a courageous person.”
What advice did you take and what advice did you leave?
"In general I think being concerned with what others think or feel about you is a pretty big waste of time. I listen to my mentors and to the people in my life from whom I draw wisdom and guidance, but for the most part, I'd say to care about what others think will detour you from where you want to go."
How does being pregnant feel, in your own words?
“I feel very lucky saying this, but I had two of the most beautiful pregnancies I could have ever imagined. I loved the whole concept of bonding with your child while they’re baking. I used to talk to them and sing to them, I absolutely felt connected and bonded before they were even born. Being pregnant is the most universal connectedness that I could possibly feel. It made me feel very connected to humanity and women, very purposeful.”
In what ways have your children inspired your creativity personally or in your career?
“Mothering and parenting is so creative. I don’t think a lot of people feel that way, because being a parent is really difficult and you’re constantly keeping your behavior in mind in terms of how it will impact your children. It causes my brain to think in a more abstract way often, and so I’ve kind of taken that into my work life and just my life outside of the family. Now that creativity is all encompassing in my life.”
